At a time when the UK is going through a period of profound change, its legal profession has a crucial role to play upholding the rule of law and helping to secure the City of London’s continuing relevance as Brexit looms.

The British Legal Awards serve as a showcase for the achievements of one of the country's most successful sectors. Hosted by Legal Week, in association with The City of London Law Society, the glittering awards ceremony is attended by 1,000 lawyers, representing the cream of the UK's legal community.

The awards will take place on Thursday 29 November at Finsbury Square, London EC2, marking the culmination of LegalWeek CONNECT, a two-day conference, now in its second year, that will see a host of law firm leaders, general counsel, and technology and innovation heads meet to explore a wide range of issues driving innovation, disruption and change in the profession.

The awards categories have been carefully chosen both to reflect the complex and challenging work undertaken by business lawyers and to encourage innovation in the delivery of legal services and the promotion of diversity and corporate social responsibility.

Key awards include The City of London Law Society Lifetime Achievement Award, Law Firm of the Year, General Counsel of the Year, Editor's Award: Law Firm Leader of the Year and the Legal Services Innovation Award, which will showcase the most cutting-edge developments within the legal sector.

The team awards cover: M&A (large deal), M&A (medium-sized deal), private equity, banking and finance, restructuring, private client, property, energy and infrastructure, litigation and dispute resolution, regulatory and investigations, competition, commercial and TMT.
Which categories will you be entering?
At last year’s event, which was hosted by actress and comedian Sally Phillips, Fieldfisher saw off competition from seven other nominees to take home the coveted Law Firm of the Year award, while others taking home multiple honours included Allen & Overy (A&O) and Pinsent Masons.

A major feature of these awards is the credibility of the judging process as the winners are decided by an independent judging panel, which was led last year by City of London Law Society chair Ed Sparrow. It comprised senior lawyers from companies including BAE Systems, ITV, EE, Marks & Spencer, Facebook, ASOS and Vodafone, as well as former law firm leaders such as former A&O senior partner David Morley.

The British Legal Awards are free to enter, however we do encourage support of our chosen charity, The First 100 Years, a ground-breaking history project that documents the journey of women in the legal profession, from 1919 to present day. Click here to make a donation.
