The British Legal Awards are the leading awards for the UK's thriving business law community acting as a showcase for the achievements of one of the country's most successful sectors. Hosted by Legal Week in association with The City of London Law Society, this glittering awards ceremony is attended by 1,000 lawyers, representing the cream of the UK's legal community.
The legal sector contributes more than £20bn to the UK economy, £4bn of which is derived from exports. The 29 categories have been carefully chosen to reflect the variety of work undertaken by business lawyers working at law firms, legal departments, other providers of legal services and suppliers.
Key awards include The City of London Law Society Lifetime Achievement Award, Law Firm of the Year, General Counsel of the Year, Editor's Award: Law Firm Leader of the Year and the new Legal Services Innovation Award, which will showcase the most cutting-edge developments within the legal sector.
We have also expanded the number of practice areas covered by the team awards, in recognition that deals and cases are the engine room of law firms. The team awards cover the following disciplines: M&A (large deal), M&A (medium-sized deal), private equity, banking and finance, restructuring, private client, property, energy and infrastructure, litigation and dispute resolution, regulatory and investigations, competition, commercial and TMT.
Among the big winners in 2015 were RPC, which took home the much sought-after Law Firm of the Year award, while Allen & Overy (A&O) senior partner David Morley scooped the Editor's Award for Managing/Senior Partner of the Year. Key in-house awards saw Stefan Borson, Quindell's legal head, take home the title of General Counsel of the Year after overseeing a torrid period for the company, while online gambling group Gala Coral was awarded the Legal Department of the Year award.
A major feature of these awards is the credibility of the judging process as the winners are decided by an independent judging panel, chaired by Alasdair Douglas, chairman of the City of London Law Society. The panel is made up of general counsel and other senior members of the legal community, including several former law firm managing partners. This year's ceremony will take place at Finsbury Square on Thursday 24 November 2016.
