Fieldfisher, Linklaters and A&O among winners at British Legal Awards

At a time when the United Kingdom is going through a period of profound change, its legal profession has a crucial role to play upholding the rule of law and helping to secure the City of London’s continuing relevance as Brexit looms.

The British Legal Awards serve as a showcase for the achievements of one of the country's most successful sectors. Hosted by Legal Week in association with The City of London Law Society, the glittering awards ceremony is attended by 1,000 lawyers, representing the cream of the UK's legal community.

And this year the awards will have an even greater profile as they will take place at the end of the ambitious new two-day event, LegalWeek Connect, which will see a host of law firm leaders, general counsel, technology and innovation heads meet to explore a wide range of issues driving innovation, disruption and change in the profession.

The 29 categories have been carefully chosen to reflect the complex and challenging work undertaken by business lawyers working at law firms, legal departments and other providers of legal services.

Key awards include The City of London Law Society Lifetime Achievement Award, Law Firm of the Year, General Counsel of the Year, Editor's Award: Law Firm Leader of the Year and the Legal Services Innovation Award, which will showcase the most cutting-edge developments within the legal sector.

Meanwhile, the team awards cover: M&A (large deal), M&A (medium-sized deal), private equity, banking and finance, restructuring, private client, property, energy and infrastructure, litigation and dispute resolution, regulatory and investigations, competition, commercial and TMT.

Among the big winners at last year’s event, which was hosted by writer and Peep Show star David Mitchell, were Pinsent Masons, Linklaters and Vodafone. Pinsents saw off competition from firms including Clifford Chance (CC), Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Latham & Watkins to scoop the coveted Law Firm of the Year award. Linklaters took the award for M&A Team of the Year in the large deal category and Vodafone scooped Legal Department of the Year (TMT).

A major feature of these awards is the credibility of the judging process as the winners are decided by an independent judging panel.

This year's ceremony will take place on Thursday 30 November at Finsbury Square, London EC2.
