With the UK and Europe battling to return to growth, competition among leading commercial law firms could not be fiercer. Meanwhile, in-house legal teams are grappling with the impact of the post-credit crunch regulatory clampdown at a time when budgets are under huge pressure. The British Legal Awards set out to recognise the achievements of those law firms, teams and individuals who are responding most successfully to the demands being placed on them in the new post-recession business environment. The awards are divided into individual, team and firm categories and have been carefully chosen to reflect the range of practice areas and skills that lie at the heart of the successful law firm or legal department. This year we have introduced an important new award - Diversity Initiative of the Year. It is designed to recognise the efforts many law firms are taking to improve social mobility within the legal profession. As ever, the shortlist and winners will be chosen by an independent panel of judges made up of senior in-house lawyers, former managing and senior partners and other senior business figures. The judges meet in person to deliberate and the decisions of the panel are final.
